Ted Bonnitt's new digital doc, "Mau Mau Sex Sex," takes a look at 84-year-old Dan Sooney and 76-year-old David Friedman, notorious makers of some of the worst sleaze and exploitation films ever. The terrific profile includes amazing clips from the duo's vast selection of nudie pics, "S&M roughies" and other variant treasures. Beyond being an exemplary digital film, however, what makes "Mau Mau" significant is director/producer Bonnitt's decision to distribute the film himself using state-of-the-art digital projection equipment. Foregoing the traditional transfer to film, Bonnitt made a special arrangement with Sharp Electronics, and has been booking the film himself in various venues. He likens his endeavor to that of the old days of "road shows," when showmen would roll into town touting not only new films, but new ways of screening them. For its LA screening, "Mau Mau" will grace the American Cinematheque's new Steven Spielberg Theater, the first LA venue devoted exclusively to independent digital cinema. Complete information, the theatrical trailer and reviews may be seen at the film's Web site.
"Mau Mau Sex Sex" screens September 28 - October 4 at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles; Bonnitt will answer questions about his film and his distribution methods after the screenings on Friday and Saturday nights. |
